Edan Ogboni Yoruba badges, Nigeria. - Lot 226
Edan Ogboni Yoruba badges, Nigeria. Copper alloy, metal. L. 22 cm and 22.5 cm. Effigies linked by a chain to the tops of the heads, seats of spiritual power in the vernacular culture. Worn during ceremonies around the neck by the officiants of Ogoni society (made up of the community's "elders"), they symbolize the powerful counter-power of the latter against the omnipotence of the king or Oba, thus guaranteeing relative social equilibrium.
